Topic: The Space Between Thoughts
"yogas chitta vritti nirodhah"
This is the second verse of the ancient text, Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and gives a definition of yoga. It means the cessastion of thoughts or the stilling of the ripples in the mind.
Descartes famously stated, "I think, therefore I am." Taken another way...the idea of "I-ness" arises only with thoughts. Thus, there is no "I" in deep sleep or meditation. "It is raining" may be said about weather. However, in reality there is no "it" behind the rain. Such is the case with the I-thought.
Yoga is a system known to have 8 Limbs, beginning with ethical precepts, followed by asanas or postures, breath control, meditation and peaking with samadhi or evenness in the mind resulting in realization of oneness, unity or yoga.
This meeting will explore tips for understanding the philosophy of yoga as a means to transcend suffering.
